Introduction
In today’s fast-paced world, the definition of wealth has evolved beyond just financial success. It now encompasses physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual alignment. For high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) and founders, mental health has emerged as a critical asset class. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a dramatic shift in how wealth is perceived—shifting from solely financial prowess to a more holistic understanding of success. In this article, I’ll explore the growing relevance of mental well-being among the wealthy and how improving their mental health can significantly enhance performance, longevity, and happiness.
Mental Health: The Hidden Cost of Success
In 2014, after four years of research as an organizational neuroscientist, I published Headstrong Performance, sharing insights on how high-performers can maximize cognitive capacity. My research involved studying the brains of over 150 C-suite executives. One fascinating discovery was how these high-achievers possess an exceptionally high tolerance for pain and discomfort, a trait that drives them toward financial success. However, this same grit comes at a steep cost.
By suppressing pain and ignoring stress signals, many high-performers become disconnected from their own mental and physical well-being. In fact, they often misinterpret chronic stress and anxiety as their "normal." This detachment accelerates aging and makes them susceptible to serious health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and early dementia. Although financial success may seem paramount, it’s clear that ignoring mental health leads to consequences that undermine their ability to enjoy the wealth they’ve worked so hard to build.
A New Definition of Wealth
Thankfully, perceptions are changing. Today’s wealthy individuals recognize that wealth isn’t just measured in dollars but also in physical fitness, mental well-being, and personal fulfillment. In fact, physical health now holds more status in aging populations than material wealth. For many of my clients, mental health practices like fitness, mindfulness, and balanced living are becoming the top strategies for sustaining performance and extending the quality of life.
Managing Stress through the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Founders often face immense stress. A key factor in managing this stress is optimizing the parasympathetic nervous system, which acts as the body’s "brake pedal." By learning to balance their sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) systems, founders can control stress levels and achieve peak performance.
A simple yet powerful analogy is to consider the nervous system as a car. The gas pedal represents the sympathetic nervous system, driving you forward, while the brake pedal is the parasympathetic, allowing you to rest and reset. High-performers need to master this delicate balance to stay "in the zone"—the ideal state of performance. Techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, and physical exercise help founders shift between these states, ensuring they maintain mental clarity and focus under pressure.
The Power of a Growth Mindset
Carol Dweck’s concept of a growth-oriented mindset—believing that skills and intelligence can be developed—is fundamental for founders. Those who cultivate this mindset see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. This mindset not only helps founders manage stress but also drives resilience and innovation within their organizations. By fostering a growth mindset culture, leaders empower their teams to take risks, solve problems creatively, and adapt to market changes.
Emotional Regulation: A Key to Leadership
Emotions, when unmanaged, can undermine decision-making. Emotional intelligence, particularly self-awareness, is essential for founders. Practicing emotional regulation techniques, such as labeling emotions and situational assessment, helps leaders maintain focus, especially in high-stress situations. By distinguishing between what they can control, influence, or must accept, leaders can manage frustration and channel their energy more productively.
Trends in Mental Health Management
In recent years, mental health has shifted from stigma to strength, especially among high-profile leaders. Technological advances in biofeedback, EEG, and functional MRI are enabling new ways to optimize mental performance. Clinics using these technologies are emerging globally, offering high-performers new avenues to enhance brain health. Similarly, the fitness industry is adopting a holistic approach, integrating mental health into physical fitness regimes.
Managing Energy for Sustainable Success
In my latest book, Five Energies of Horrible Bosses and How Not to Become One, I explore the idea of energy as a compass. Leaders operate in five distinct energy states: determined, inviting, heavy, light, and neutral. By consciously managing their energy and shifting between these states based on situational demands, leaders can avoid burnout and maintain mental stability. This dynamic approach to energy management is proving highly effective in leadership, business strategy, and overall life performance.
The Role of Executive Coaching
Coaching plays a critical role in helping founders enhance their mental well-being. Effective coaching focuses on three areas: leading oneself, leading others, and leading the business. Founders must prioritize mental health to regulate emotions, stay calm under pressure, and make rational decisions. The basics—adequate sleep, regular exercise, mindfulness, and a plant-based diet—are foundational to both mental health and leadership success.
Integrating Mental Health into Daily Life
For high-net-worth individuals, integrating mental health practices into daily routines is essential for maintaining peak performance. Much like elite athletes, top performers recognize that they cannot achieve success alone. Hiring a coach or therapist is akin to "taking your mind to the gym"—it strengthens cognitive flexibility and emotional resilience. The key to long-term success lies in practicing conviction, commitment, and consistency in mental health routines.
Looking Ahead: Mental Health and the Future of Wealth
The next generation of leaders, particularly Gen Z, is redefining wealth. They value mental well-being, purpose, and social impact as much as financial success. As this generation enters the workforce, organizations will need to adapt by incorporating mental health support, work-life balance, and socially responsible practices into their cultures. In the coming years, we’ll see wealth measured not only by bank accounts but also by the quality of life, health, and happiness.
The time has come to treat mental health as the most valuable asset class for the rich. As our understanding of wealth evolves, so must our approach to maintaining it. For founders and HNWIs, prioritizing mental well-being will not only extend their lives but also enhance their ability to lead with clarity, purpose, and resilience.
